Ed Sheeran : The A Team (Live on Conan)

I was watching Late Night with Conan o’brien when I heard Ed Sheeran perform this on the show. I’ll be honest, up until this point I haven’t been following Sheeran’s music. I don’t know why either, he’s an amazing musician — and I knew it. After watching this performance, i’m totally kicking myself. It made me realize how beautiful his music is and how it has the power to transcend your mood/thoughts.

In this performance, he does a great job articulating his words and staying on pitch throughout his runs. I must have replayed this video 15 times already in the past week. My favorite line in the song, “It’s too cold for angels to fly”. Powerful stuff. If only I had this in my iTunes arsenal when I was going through a rough time last week. Oh well, it’s never too late!

Frank Ocean – Swim Good (Sean Rumsey cover)

Sean Rumsey

I got teary eyed when I listened to this. I’ll admit, i’m definitely an emotional guy, but I typically don’t cry when i’m hurt or sad. What is it then that moved me almost to tears? Could it be the lyrics from the original artist Frank Ocean? The vocals from Sean Rumsey? The instrumentals? Maybe…but honestly, I don’t know. I do know i’ve been in a similar situation before though — and by before, I mean many times before.

Tracking this back, I can start to see a strong correlation. A correlation that connects music with the act of “being moved”, and I don’t mean moved in the literal sense either. For me, music brings everything together. It’s the glue for my sanity and the arm pinch that evokes feeling, reminding me i’m alive. I realized that certain songs have the power of completely incapsulating my senses — directing my thoughts entirely to a specific moment. When I get teary eyed after listening to a song, it’s not because i’m personally sad…it’s because I could FEEL what the artist was trying to portray.

The wonderful thing about music is that it’s a fantastic way to express feelings with feelings. You’re probably saying, ehhh…what? For instance, if Ramsey simply spoke the lyrics to Swim Good, we could still come to an understanding on what the lyrics meant in a literal sense. However, we would be left empty with what the artist was trying to portray emotionally. Instead, he sang the lyrics with such a heartfelt, and soulful passion that I was able to FEEL his feelings…I knew exactly what he was trying to say. He emotionally portrayed his story in a way that was so powerful, it choked me up.

To me, this is the best type of music —  the music that gives you goosebumps or brings you to tears. Those who have been moved by a song will know that it’s one of the most beautiful highs you’ll experience, ever. This helps give clarity to why i’ve been at this state many times before…there’s just no feeling like it and I.Can’t.Get.Enough.

Now sit back, close your eyes and let the music take control.
